Well I guess it is official. Considering we are sitting in the hotel room 14th floor and Bob is enjoying watching the planes coming in and taking off. A really nice view of the cityscape facing south. Tomorrow will be an early start and a long day but I'm sure the end result will be rewarding.

Kingston

Yes we made it. Staying at a motel
near the center of the city. Time
to go home. Tomorrow we will be
heading to Keswick. Road trips give
you the freedom but can also be very
tiring. I think we somehow were a
litle more relaxed on the guided
tours. We drove down to the waterfront
but it is not the nicest part of town.
I'm sure there is lots of nicer areas
and places to visit.....but it is
time to go home.
We met some really nice people. Ate
some good food. Travelled on some
new roads. Had fantastic weathers.
Stayed at some unusual locations.
Been wonderfully entertained. Made
some good memories.
I think that a vacation means all of
that.

Wednesday morning (still raining)

I love dealing with someone who loves
their job. Such is the mgr @ the motel
in Quebec City. Gave us quick and
easy directions how to exit. As to
Getting past Monteal. Just keep your
eye on #40 and your foot on the pedal
and don't stop. Yeah, sure but what
happens when the construction divides
the road. Sure they say "Keep to the
middle" they say that also. But what
happens when there is a cement barrier
between your car and the road you want.
Or worse still you nearly go blind
trying to quickly read every sign.
Worse still when you both are trying
to search but the traffic keeps
pushing you ahead. Or when Bob in
complete frustration says "I can't
read this language". At the last
Gas station I picked up a map for
Quebec....why would I possibly want
to purchase that. So as I tried to
read whatever numbers I could on
the Ontario map with about 2 inches
of Quebec showing I figured out
where we were. Heading to Ottawa so
from there I was able to redirrect
us to #20 which takes us onto the
401 heading towards Kingston.

Quebec City

I will never know how I managed to
direct the driver aka Bob how to
get to our motel. Unfamiliar roads
and names. Names and numbers changing
as we moved through the heavy trafficc
Signs are on a slant so difficult to
read. Oh yes and it was still raining.
Everyone else knew where they were
going .....to say the least I was
amazed to see our destination in
front of my eyes. Good stuff right..
wait.....it seems we are a little to
early to check in
Necessity the mother of invention
I suggested we take this time to
"find a restaurant" Once again no
easy task. But I did remember the
well know chicken restaurant
St Hubert. Asked the staff and they
directed us around the corner. So we
took a drive to find the exact
location (still raining). Remembering
my friend Cato"s advice. Go early better
service. When we went @ 5 o'clock there
were about 6 people in front of us.
We left and were back @ the motel by
6:30 having enjoyed the most delicious
meal. The price was reasonable but it
was the service that is astounding.
Watching the staff clear tables. Serve
meals with such efficiency was some+
thing to witness. Always pleasant with
a smile and professional appearance.
It is no wonder these young girls stay
so slim as they move the people. When
we left there was no parking spaces
left and the lineup was out past the
second door. No problem for this business
They know how to produce. I would highly
recommend as did Bob.

Quebec Province

What I can tell you for certain is
that it rained for all the time in
the province other than the half
hour @ Tim Horton's. I have heard
so many people talk about Riviere
De Loup this would be an opportunity
to go there. As with most large areas
we were greeted with construction and
detours. Not only that they speak
another language. Bob was getting
very frustrated with the situation.
We stopped for coffee and a moment
to make a decision. That was just
about the time the rain started.
Actually we didn't see sunshine
again till we were into Ontario. I
will spare you Bob's assertations.

New Brunswick

Well here we are back again on the
mainland. It is really amazing as
you drive through the provinces.
The landscape varies as you pass
through each one. At times the rock
walls remind you of driving through
Muskoka. Then you will pass thru a
very bushy area similar to northern
Ontario. New roads and bridges
all being worked on right down thru
the Trans Canada. Couldn't help but
singing "you take the high road and
Ill take the low road". At various
parts the highway is divided such.
Btw. It was usually the south bound
that took the high road at least
a 100 ft. Sometimes even driving
through a cloud. The roads are clear
and smooth driving with no heavy
traffic. But this is the main road
for transports in and out of the
Maritimes. So lots of space for
everyone.
Speaking of space tho check out who
pulled into the space beside us at
the motel. Yes, talk about "special
Delivery.

Time to leave PEI

I can't explain it but I am so drawn
to the Island. Once with my sister
and this is the third time with Bob.
Each was a different experience and
I continually want to return.
Be that as it may it is time to go
back to Ontario. Of course the
weather was perfect. It always seems
the day you leave "The Spot" that is
what happens. So we spent a little
more time at the Gateway to the
Bridge before we started onto the
Bridge. 14 km. and about 15 min to
cross. What an experience

THEN WHAT TO DO WITH THE REST OF THE DAY

We did spend some time at Cavendish
but it certainly was crowded. I
would have like to spend longer.
Roadtrips call for compromise that
is a fact. Being that we had visited
that spot a few times before.....
need I say more.
Knowing that the best suggestions
come a local I approached a woman
with her daughter and grandson. Not
really difficult to find a local.
Look for someone not carrying a map
or camera. Their suggestion was a
good one. With directions we found
ourselves at the wharf aptly named
Mrs. Peake's. I'm sure there is a
historical backdrop to the name.
A covered stage with a grassy area
in front provided the spot for the
afternoon entertainment. Two young
talented men sang and played guitar
as we meandered around or sat and
enjoyed the music. Several little
stores to walk thru. Many having a
picture of William and Kate.
Apparently this was one of the stops
on PEI that they made. Great advertising
for their shops as you could read the
Shop name behind the crowds. A nice way
to end the day.

Sunday

With the directions changed then
today must be the day for Cavendish.
Not too many traveling as the weather
a bit cooler but didn't take long
to heat up. A lot of tourists in
the area. Many young families.
The Japanese have always had a
fascination with Anne of Green Gables.
So there was quite a number of them
looking to purchase souveniers.

As we headed toward Rustico down the
road from Avonlea the landscape changed.
Not only that but the type of holidayers.
Every 3rd or 4th car was carrying
either bikes or kayaks. There is
something here for everyone to enjoy.

The boys homemade pool
Sent from my BlackBerry device on the Rogers Wireless Network

Beach Life

To set your feet on the beach at
Basinhead PEI is the real thing.
To start off the sand is creamy
white and just oozes thru your toes.
Soft and warm under your feet where
you can walk out for such a long
way. The children making sand castles
the one little boy who had dug up the
sand made his own little pond. The
sides piled up and the hole filled
with water. In this pool he had about
4 or 5 different crabs and other live
species from the gulf swimming there.
Lots of onlookers but the black and
white is a soccor ball.

Lots of people sitting on the beach
with young families enjoying the day.

The big excitement was watching the
teens as they dared one another to
make the jump. There is a canal
channel where the water ebbs and flows
with the tide. The jump was @ least
30 ft @ that time and somewhat higher
from the wooden walkway bridge. The
width about 20 ft across with a ladder
to climb up the side. Signs were posted
No Jumping but I think the 3 or 4
Lifeguards seemed to be keeping an
eye on them and the kids were not
being reckless. Just having a lot of
fun.

Saturday Morning

With directions and address provided
by Pauline and Gerald we set out to
join them for coffee. They also gave
us their phone number if we couldn't
find their house. It is about 15 min
from where we were staying just on
the outside of the city. A small 3
bedroom modular house and they talked
about the cost and upkeep. It was a
very interesting and informative
visit. How it all came to be.

We left there around noon and headed
for the Cavendish area. I have learned
one thing for sure. When you are
traveling the 'arrow indicating East
and the arrow for west" are not always
pointing in opposite directions. Do
you follow me? The result was we
ended up going east instead of north.
But on PEI there is so so much to see
and enjoy that you just adjust your
plan for that day. Now I will admit
I don't think Bob understood what I
was trying to explain to him.

Nevertheless we arrived @ Basinhead
which was well worth the trip. One
hour it took but seemed longer because
Of the frustration.

Our entertainment Friay Nite @ the Celeigh
Sent from my BlackBerry device on the Rogers Wireless Network

Entertainment for Friday Night

What do you do on a Friday nite when
you are new in town. You read the
local paper. This is a habit I have
picked up over the years. I read that
there is a Celeigh going on around
the corner @ 8 o'clock that night.
We were entertained by a very talented
young woman on the fiddle, a young
man on the guitar and a older man
closer to our age on guiter. Two hours
of storytelling, music and song. An
intermission of 15 min with sandwiches
and coffe served admission $8. Proceeds
going to The Benevolent Irish Society
for the ongoing renovations to their
building. What a musical night.

Now if that wasn't enough......at the
intermission as we stood up to stretch
and a conversation ensued with the
couple behind us. Pauline and Gerald
Gillis retirees from Mississauga
living down here. Pauline originally
from the Island and Gerald originally
from Cape Breton Island. Both had left
way back in the 60's but chose to
retire here. The cost of housing is
very low with a lot of houses for sale
. The main reason being the unemployment
situation. By the time the intermission
was over we were invited to drop over
for coffee the next morning

The piper welcoming everyone
Sent from my BlackBerry device on the Rogers Wireless Network

Destination Charlottetown

We arrived in town around noon hour.
Nothing is really far away on the
Island. The map is full-scale so it
appears to look like long driving
times but that is not so. I had
prebooked our motels but plans for
the day were sketchy. Certain
locations to see but nothing written
in stone. We were fortunate to get
our room right away then headed
downtown which takes all of 10 min.
It is a fun area to walk around with
a piper dressed in full regalia at
the corner welcoming the people.
Of course little boutique stores
to brouse through. Restaurant with
outdoor patios. This is all just
passed the. Confederation Buiding.

Rescue Mission

There are lots of interesting little
shops and craft dispalys at Spinacker
Wharf in Summerside. As I was spending
time doing such Bob was standing on
the boardwalk behind the stores
adjacent to the water. Watching the
sailboats skimming over the water
along the shoreline. All of a sudden
everyone was watching as 1 sailboat
overturned with the 2 young people
in the Northumberland Straight and
their boat upside down. They were
wearing lifejackets and the rescue
boat was there immediately. The show
was watching these young people turn
the boat rightside up. The men stayed
on the dock and the women went back
to looking around the shops. No one
was hurt that was the important thing.
But interesting how they managed to
get in back up.

Tour of the Lighthouse

I managed to climb 4 flights of very
steep stairs to get to the top. The
last set was almost completely
Vertical but the air was getting very
thin and warm. Bob went right to the
top but you couldn't stay long as it
was still quite foggy @ the time.
We spent time talking to Jeff the
Innkeeper retired from the Hydro and
working here managing the location.
He was born here on the Island and
has been quite involved in his family
geneology. If you go back far enough a
large percentage of families on the
Island are related. Many interesting
stories he shared with us. After
breakfast we packed up reluctantly
to depart. We met a young family
from Port Hope with 2 young girls
at breakfast. At dinner the night
before a couple with 3 children.
The majority of people are just there
for the 1 night ...costly but for sure
worth the experience.

In the middle on nowhere

Well I guess I really shouldn't say
nowhere because we were about a mile
outside of O'Leary.
Lo and behold we turn a corner and
there sits a Tim Horton's. It kind
of reminded me of those commercials
because yes it was full of travelers.

Thursday Nite

We decided to see just how long it
would take us to walk to the wharf.
The reason being is that is where
we would be eating dinner. Breakfast
is part of the accomodation but not
dinner. A 20 min walk took us there.
Old building renovated with 2 floors
set for eating. People so friendly
and laid back. Chef came out of the
kitchen to ask if we had enjoyed the
meal. We did end up driving there
because as soon as we returned from
the walk it started raining. From
our table we look right onto the
Northumberland Straight with all
the old buildings used by the fishing
industry.

I almost forgot to tell you about

so many different countries. It was
a worthwhile stop and once again
met some really nice people. This
was just before we reached the

The Lighthouse

It was less than an hour to drive to
the lighthouse. West Point is part of
the Provincial Park. But not to confuse
you think in terms of a large town
park. In order to protect the RED sand
dunes they have to build boardwalks
all along. You are allowed access @
certain points with steps over the dunes.
They need the grasses there to hold back
the erosion. It is as magical as you
can believe walking along the red sand.

The lighthouse was buit in 1875 and
its distinction is the fact of being
the only Black and White building.
There is an addition put on which has
2 floors consisting of about 24 units.
Our room was really in the actual
lighthouse up on the 2nd level.
The measurements are about 12 x 12
with a 15 ft high ceiling. The bathroom
was also a new addition tub toilet
Vanity and walk in shower. The furniture
was antique and the bed was extremely
deep and comfortable. Two original
windows in that room and one original

Stories from dinner

Wow, that was certainly interesting
dinner besides being quite delicious.
Apparently the building which is the
restaurant was formerly the Officer's
Mess Hall. The base was shut down 20
years ago but the airport is still
used for training. A group of people
put money into upgrading the base and
turned it into a Conference Center.
At the end of this month they are
holding a "massive reunion". A very
large number of people worked @ the
base. Our waitress was telling us that
her mother worked here in the
accounting dept and will be attending.
The center is completely sold out that
weekend. There are 3 planes out in
front and everything is in preparation
for this event. A fascinating evening.

Day 4

We left Beacon Light Motel early this
morning heading for PEI. I thought how
appropiate named as we head toward the
Island. One thing I must say is don't
completely trust Mapquest. At least we
Were on the island so u can't go to
far astray. You are on an island.

So now for the exciting part. This
location is actually an old "Air Force
"Base". Our room is in one of the
barracks modernized. About 6 different
buildings each 2 stories. Notice the
entry door. It has 3 large planes @
The entrance. It is called Slemon Park
Hotel and Conference Center. I didn't
know this story when I booked. It
kind of adds to the Adventure.

3rd Day

Well the weather has certainly been
co-operating. This morning we drove
around for a tour of the city. Our
friends Ann & Jim moved down here
about 4 years ago just across the
river from Moncton. A lovely area
filled with a senior generation.
A most enjoyable afternoon. It was
Ann & Jim that introduced us to so
many people @ St John's when we
first time we went there.

After our visit we drove up to
Magnetic Hill for the remainder
of the day. Of course I found a
sweatshirt which has (can u
believe it LIGHTHOUSES on it).
And yes it was on sale. We walked
around the park for a while had
a Beavertail. It seems we have to
go on holidays for me to get one.
The last one was Vancouver last
year.

Tonite we found a Montana's
Restaurant which included a half
hour walk each way. For sure we
needed that walk.
Tomorrow we head for the Island,

I am so looking forward to being
there.

Day 2

It is amazing how long it seems planning a holiday
and how quickly the time flies once u r on ur way.
Last night we stayed in Drummondville about 1 hour
past Montreal. A nice place just off the highway
On the ground floor. At this point I know Bob and
myself would like to apologize to all non smoking
relatives and friends. With the rules in place for
NO smoking we are very aware of the smell. This is
sitting outside the motel room. Enough said

The drive thru the province of Quebec and NB all
in one day was a little to much. But all other
days will be considerably shorter. The main
reason is that Bob does not know how to handle
situations where another language is spoken. There
really was no problem until last nite ordering
dinner. The waitress I think was very new to
the job and knew very little English. So we ended
up just pointing to the word pizza

The drive thru NB is fairly easy but long right
thru to Moncton. I will say tho the amount of
Infrastructure going on thru trans canada is
amazing. New roads and bridges all the way down
the river

It was around 6 o'clock tonite by the time we
pulled into the motel I have made contact with
our friends and will be going there tomorrow
for lunch. After we leave them we are going to
make a trip to the Magnetic Hill Park

Tune I tomorrow to hear all about it

The Journey begins

Well we had a good start out to the day. But it is
amazing how much you need to bring once you reach
The senior generation. Ah well, better to havbe it
In case u need it

Yes driving thru Montreal could be so much simpler
If there was no construction on the roads. Also if
Mapquest was aware of all these most recent closures.

So for me the answer is stop and ASK. We parked @ the
Sheraton. Downtown Montreal. I mean if ur going to
ask go to someone who knows the city. I can tell you
They were friendly and very helpful. The other major
Problem is that the # on the highway change and
Disappear till you are sure that you are somehow
lost. Voila all of a sudden. Yes you are still
on the same road,

So for tonight we are in Drummondville and will head
out first thing in the morning. Already met a nice
couple next door Edie and Jim. They are from Lindsay
And have been traveling for 3 weeks down east
